Top 10 Heart-Broken Anime Girls

kanna_cryingHarem shows are the anime industry’s bread and butter these days, with studios churning out show after show wherein multiple girls vie for the affections of one (loser/bland) guy. It only seems logical that fans often have at least one particular girl in any given series that they end up rallying behind, which is why the creators often end things without any one girl being chosen, thereby keeping their audience sated while leaving themselves an opening for continued harem hijinks in the future.

But every once in a blue moon a show will make the bold decision, for varying reasons, to have one girl come out on top in the romance department. Naturally, with only one girl gaining exclusive rights to the male lead’s heart, it’s inevitable that one or more of the girls not chosen are going to end up heart-broken.

In these instances I often find that I have thrown my support behind the wrong girl, which leaves me almost as heart-broken as the girls I was rooting for. Hence the origin for this post listing the top ten anime girls that I felt the most sympathy for when their hearts were broken, even if we’re not really shown the extent of their heartbreak or it was obvious from the beginning that they had no chance.

WTF Japan?!? – Incest Is Best

Cover image changed because apparently that's all anyone had to say about this entire post.

Cover image changed because apparently that’s all anyone had to say about this entire post.

The latest edition of WTF Japan?!? covers the taboo topic of incest and it’s prevalence in anime. While incest is nothing new to the entertainment medium, like the traps in anime that I discussed previously, incest and it’s varying iterations has become something of an unhealthy presence in anime.

As I’m sure all are aware, incest involves romantic or sexual relationships between closely related persons, most often family members. With respect to anime, these illicit relationships can run the gamut from the more extreme parent/child or blood-related siblings to the slightly more tame step-siblings, cousins or brother/sister complexes. The degree to which a relationship is taken or how seriously it is treated is all dependent on the anime.

Entropic State of the Industry: North American Anime Distributors

You want us but you can’t have us…

As mentioned previously, I will be rolling out a few new regular segments on this blog, and Entropic State of the Industry will be one of them. Essentially this will be a feature designed for me to rant and rave or express some form of displeasure with the sorry state of the media industry, primarily in relation to anime, video games and film/television, but I reserve the right to bitch about whatever my little heart desires (my heart may be small, but there is no correlation between heart size and the size of other love organs, just so you know).

This past week I heard the great news that my favorite anime, Bakemonogatari, was finally licensed and would (most probably at this point in time) be released for future purchase in North America. I was ecstatic – for all of one second, because then I saw who would be distributing it: Aniplex of America. In my not so humble opinion, of all the possible choices out there, this is the worst possible company that could hold the rights to this great show.

So with that information in mind, now seemed like the ideal opportunity to start off this new segment with a few of my issues with the state of the North American anime licensors and distributors.

Top 10 Male Anime Characters

A.k.a., My Big Gay Animated Harem!

Update: I can’t believe I completely forgot Touma Kamijou from To aru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index), so I added him as a .5 entry so as not to force anyone else out.

When it comes to males in anime, more often than not the primary protagonists are very generic. The intent is to create a character that is relatively inoffensive and something of a loser so that the audience can identify more with the character in addition to being assured that they too could get a bevy of beautiful women flocking to them for being a nobody, which in itself is offensive in its own right. This generally means that we are stuck with main characters that are wimpy, perverted, cowardly, a laughingstock or perhaps even devoid of personality altogether.

There are often male characters that occupy the opposite end of the spectrum, but unfortunately, for male viewers especially, this group is no better, as these are the sexy and flawless bishounen (commonly referred to as pretty pretty bishies) that are clearly being marketed to women. It’s hard to take a man seriously when he 1) looks more like a girl than a guy and 2) literally sparkles.

Now I’m not saying there isn’t a place for these men. Everybody has their own tastes and preferred genre. I guess I’m just saying there’s not a place for them on my list.

Instead what I look for in a man (wow, that didn’t come out right at all) is a character full of personality, strength of one sort or another, intelligence, confidence and/or just a natural “cool” factor that can’t be cosmetically inserted. It is their actions and approach to the world that gives them their edge, not just their design.

So without further ado, here are my top 10 male anime characters:

My Anime Harem

A.k.a, The Top Female Anime Characters

For now I’m going to switch my attention to anime. As with the video games, it’s probably best to put out a few lists to give you an idea of what types of characters I like or don’t like to give you an idea of what to expect from me. Since anime tends to really be about the beautiful girls (when not about mecha), let’s start with my favorite female characters.

What initially drew me in with anime (and has kept me around) was the distinctive art style, and the beautifully designed girls in particular. So over the years I have watched countless hours of anime and become attached to quite a few shows and characters; so much so that I found coming up with a top 10 list almost impossible. Technically my top 3 are set in stone but the rest are rather flexible, so it felt rather unfair to me that several characters wouldn’t make the list simply because I couldn’t figure out where precisely they fit in the ranking order. So in order to include most of them, I have made this a list of 25 and kept my reasons for including each girl on the list brief to compensate.

So without further ado, here are the anime girls that would top my harem list:
