* Be forewarned: This post is full of SPOILERS for the Steins;Gate movie and series. *

Every now and then something comes along that really resonates with you and simultaneously warms your heart even as it’s breaking it in two. The Steins;Gate series, and now the epilogue film Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu (translates as Steins;Gate: Burdened Domain of Déjà vu) is one of those powerful stories for me.

The Steins;Gate series was a remarkable achievement in the way it wove together such a complicated story, fabulous characters and yet still managed to provoke such a strong emotional reaction from its audience. In my mind I always refer to it as a masterpiece in storytelling, though I know it is not without its flaws. But flaws or not, it made a lasting impression on me and I’m not sure it’s possible to love it more than I already do.

Which brings us to the movie follow-up that helps tie things together neatly with a bow, and confirmed my love for this series a thousand times over. Is the movie perfect? No, but it makes the series all the more emotionally resonant with such a sweet and heartfelt send-off, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

Top 10 Male Anime Characters

A.k.a., My Big Gay Animated Harem!

Update: I can’t believe I completely forgot Touma Kamijou from To aru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index), so I added him as a .5 entry so as not to force anyone else out.

When it comes to males in anime, more often than not the primary protagonists are very generic. The intent is to create a character that is relatively inoffensive and something of a loser so that the audience can identify more with the character in addition to being assured that they too could get a bevy of beautiful women flocking to them for being a nobody, which in itself is offensive in its own right. This generally means that we are stuck with main characters that are wimpy, perverted, cowardly, a laughingstock or perhaps even devoid of personality altogether.

There are often male characters that occupy the opposite end of the spectrum, but unfortunately, for male viewers especially, this group is no better, as these are the sexy and flawless bishounen (commonly referred to as pretty pretty bishies) that are clearly being marketed to women. It’s hard to take a man seriously when he 1) looks more like a girl than a guy and 2) literally sparkles.

Now I’m not saying there isn’t a place for these men. Everybody has their own tastes and preferred genre. I guess I’m just saying there’s not a place for them on my list.

Instead what I look for in a man (wow, that didn’t come out right at all) is a character full of personality, strength of one sort or another, intelligence, confidence and/or just a natural “cool” factor that can’t be cosmetically inserted. It is their actions and approach to the world that gives them their edge, not just their design.

So without further ado, here are my top 10 male anime characters:

My Anime Harem

A.k.a, The Top Female Anime Characters

For now I’m going to switch my attention to anime. As with the video games, it’s probably best to put out a few lists to give you an idea of what types of characters I like or don’t like to give you an idea of what to expect from me. Since anime tends to really be about the beautiful girls (when not about mecha), let’s start with my favorite female characters.

What initially drew me in with anime (and has kept me around) was the distinctive art style, and the beautifully designed girls in particular. So over the years I have watched countless hours of anime and become attached to quite a few shows and characters; so much so that I found coming up with a top 10 list almost impossible. Technically my top 3 are set in stone but the rest are rather flexible, so it felt rather unfair to me that several characters wouldn’t make the list simply because I couldn’t figure out where precisely they fit in the ranking order. So in order to include most of them, I have made this a list of 25 and kept my reasons for including each girl on the list brief to compensate.

So without further ado, here are the anime girls that would top my harem list:
